Over the last few years many manufacturers have been replacing old style mechanical dashboards with new digital ones. This has been done mainly to reduce the costs of producing dashboards, and also because it is a more accurate way of measuring mileage. However, problems can arise.
The dashboard relies on information stored within a memory device called an EEPROM (Electronically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory). This device is susceptible to electrical disturbances caused by the car's electrical system, which can cause corruption of the information stored within. For example, jump starting your car, or even having a flat battery can cause the mileage to increase or decrease. Damage caused by vandals, or theft may require a new dash to be fitted. The mileage display is likely to be different from the original, making it difficult to then sell the car.
Recalibration is the process of re-programming the vehicle's EEPROM with the correct mileage information.
